Brown Trout

The chacteristics of the brown trout include large black and sometimes reddish-orange spots with a pale border on the side of the fish. During summer these fish are a silverish color with a brown tint, but while spawning they turn a brilliant brownish-gold color with many black and red spots. Browns can grow to huge sizes. When mature, they grow long and turn round and fat like footballs. In the Great Lakes browns can weigh on average 10-25 pounds, a fish over 15 pounds is a beauty. The largest brown caught in the Midwest was a 36 pounder. What makes them look like a football is the fact of them eating anything that comes near them. Altough many anglers use the method catch-and-release, there is no problem with keeping a few for eating. The food of a browns diet is insects, worms, crayfish, and other baitfish consiting of minnows, shiners, and smaller chubs.
