Businessman’s newsletter writing honored with awards

Two publications written by Jim Schoemer, owner of JP Schoemer Communications, a writing and marketing communications firm in Sheboygan, have been honored with Circle of Excellence awards by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), an international association of education institutions.

The newsletters’ publisher, Robert Morris College headquartered in Chicago, received the awards for external audience newsletters, one of 43 categories of the program.

WhatNext?, a newsletter for high-schoolers, won a Gold Medal, and SmartStart, a newsletter for fifth- and sixth-graders, won a Bronze. Only six medals were awarded out of a field of 55 entries.

“We are extremely pleased,” beamed Nancy Donohoe, director of public relations for Robert Morris College.

“These two winning newsletters make up two-thirds of a trio of publications for elementary school students, high school students and soon-to-be college parents. We are very proud of all three pieces.” Particularly rewarding is that the two winning Robert Morris College newsletters competed successfully in a category with recent winners that have included such renowned institutions as Duke, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins.

Of WhatNext?, judges wrote: “…lively design and active writing that is clearly intended for its audience,” and called SmartStart "an inventive effort to reach an audience that typically is not part of a university’s marketing efforts."

“When Nancy called to tell me we had won awards, I was, of course, very pleased,” said Schoemer. But when I saw who some of those other winners have been, I just sort of stepped back and said, ‘Whoa!’ And I couldn’t help feeling good that the two editions of each newsletter that were submitted just happened to be the first two that I wrote for the college — prior editions had never won. I’m really happy for Nancy, and glad that I had the opportunity to be a part of the winning effort.”

Schoemer has written for these newsletters since fall 2000, and his firm has been in business since 1998.

His work as a writer and marketing communications consultant encompasses advertising, public relations, Web site planning and writing, publications, employee and customer communication, presentations, training, and general business communication.

Donohoe spoke very highly of Schoemer and the creative team. “When I speak with the president of the college, I tell him that we’ve gotten it down to a very well-working process, like a well-oiled machine…”

Both of these award-winning newsletters are products of the ongoing collaboration of Donohoe as editor, Schoemer as writer, and CI Design of Milwaukee as project manager and designer.
