Dealer Newsletter: Marketeer

(Created while employed by a marketing consulting firm)

Back in 1995, Toshiba identified a need to communicate with its “megastore” dealers and their sales reps, who tended to be you, post-high-school types. The Marketeer newsletter was developed to fit this need, and was written to speak to its audience in a lively, entertaining tone. You can read some of the Marketeer articles I wrote and/or edited by clicking a link below.

Why Expand a Notebook Computer?

What’s a Marketeer?

It’s not a mustached, swashbuckling swordsman in a plumed hat. It’s not a Mickey Mouse ears-topped youth from the 1950s glued to a black and white TV. So just what is a “Marketeer?

In a word, YOU.

You are the person who deals with Toshiba end users. We’re the experts at building the absolute best notebook computers on the market today, and you’re the expert at putting these computers in the hands (and cars, planes, trains, hotel rooms, etc.) of the customer. Put another way, we’re the engineer, you’re the marketeer!

You’re now holding the first-ever edition of our new Marketeer newsletter. This quarterly publication, designed specifically for Toshiba consumer marketeers like you, is intended to provide you with key information to help you make more money, including new product introductions, selling strategies, product tips, and more.

Toshiba has built a strong team of individuals to make sure the Toshiba line is well presented in the marketplace. We also want to make sure that our account managers and sales support reps provide you with all the information you need to successfully represent our product. We support you, you support our customers. And Marketeer is one way that we can communicate with each other to do that.

We are excited to be partners with you, and we believe that this newsletter can help us both succeed. If you have any comments or ideas about what you’d like to see in upcoming issues, please call the Toshiba Retail Center at 1-800-226-4380. We want to hear from you!

So put away that sword and lose the mouse ears… But keep that marketeer attitude, have fun, and keep selling those Toshiba notebooks!

The Satellite T2105 Series:
Big on power, small on price They’re here: a new series of loaded notebook computers that offers all the performance and expandability you’ve come to expect from Toshiba. This time Toshiba has added one more great feature to this line: affordability! Welcome to the Toshiba Satellite T2105 notebook computer series.

Jam-packed with power, all three T2105-Series models come with a powerful 50 MHz Intel 486 DX2 processor and built-in math coprocessor. Speed through spreadsheets; dash through databases; glide through graphics; and whiz through word processors. Toshiba has even included the software bundle to do it all with: Quicken Special Edition, Claris Works 3.0, and Lotus Organizer 2.0

Need to power up on the run? Then you will really appreciate the built-in Toshiba MaxTime Power Management System. This remarkable power supply allows the T2105 Series to run longer between charges when operating from the rechargeable NiMH battery—no more bulky AC adapter to carry. Speaking of carrying stuff, you can tote your Toshiba in the padded carrying case included with all T2105 computers.

Looking for room to grow? No problem. Satellite T2105s all come with two PC card slots to expand and customize your notebook with either two Type II cards or one Type III card. There are many different Noteworthy PC cards available, providing capabilities including fax-modems, hard drives, CD-ROMs, networking, and lots more.

Of course, the T2105 Series comes with the innovations that made Toshiba the leader in notebook computing, including an AccuPoint™ pointing device and your choice of three video displays: a 9.5" STN Mono LCD, a 8.4" color dual scan, or a 10.4" active matrix color TFT.

It’s only a matter of time. The Satellite T2105 Series is destined to become the new benchmark for outstanding features at popular prices. Performance, expandability, and affordability are what drive the portable computing market, and the Toshiba Satellite T2105 Series is right on top of it.

Why Expand a Notebook Computer? One customer’s story

Charlie bought a Toshiba notebook, and it’s great. He’s doing things on the go that he used to be chained to his desk to do. When he is at his desk, he now actually has space for a bag of Ruffles and a can of Coke. In short, his Toshiba notebook has made Charlie a happy camper. So why should he risk bursting his bubble of contentment by considering expanding his computer?

Simple: PRODUCTIVITY!

Sure he’s already doing things he never could before. But there’s a lot more that he could be doing, and you’re the one who can dazzle him with the exciting possibilities. Toshiba notebooks are designed with expandability in mind, and you can help Charlie and all your customers take full advantage of today’s hottest technology. How? Accessorize! Here are some ideas you might run by Charlie…

Charlie’s on the road a lot, so you’d want to recommend that he buy a fax-modem. When he’s away, Charlie can then communicate with his company’s e-mail system as if he were at his desk munching those chips and sipping that Coke; fax his client a copy of the meeting agenda he did on the airplane; hop on the Internet to catch upon the latest O.J. news; chat with other Notre Dame fans; or buy a new Guess sweatshirt for his girlfriend Felicity. Want to get Charlie really portable? Then show him the new cellular-ready modem. In no time he’ll be doing all of the above without even being connected to a phone jack!

Even though Charlie’s not forgetful, he can probably use more memory. The more sophisticated the applications Charlie runs, the more memory he needs. Four meg? Eight meg? Sixteen meg? Different Toshiba models have different levels of expandability and RAM configurations, but all will benefit from the memory upgrade. (Call the Toshiba Retail Center if you’re not sure which RAM upgrade a particular model needs.) The rule of thumb to emphasize to Charlie and all your customers: buy as much RAM as you can possibly afford.

Charlie recently had a peripheral vision, so what does he need? A SCSI-II adapter card, of course. With it he can hook up peripherals like CD-ROM, external hard drive, scanner, tape drive, or other SCSI devices.

When Charlie goes back and forth between home, road, and office, he hates plugging all those cables in and out of his notebook. Observing this, you naturally point out that he could save a lot of time and hassle with a Port Replicator, which allows him to connect and disconnect printers, external mice, keyboards, disk drives, and monitors with the flick of a lever.

The Graphics Department where Charlie works just put together a kickass multimedia product presentation so that he doesn’t have to drag 16 catalogs along to trade shows. But he can’t quite spare the 200 megabytes of hard disk space the presentation takes up. You’re quick to describe the benefits of a removable hard drive that plugs right into the PC card slot, emphasizing that it not only holds a tone of data, it can also easily be put under lock and key when competitors are snooping around the trade show floor.

The moral of the story: the possibilities for Charlie—and all your customers—are endless when it comes to expanding the functionality of Toshiba notebook computers. So when a customer buys a computer, take the time to ask them how they plan on using it. Chances are there are accessories that will add a lot of value to their notebook purchase, making you look good and adding some extra cake to your wallet.
