Triclad® Stain Matching System®
Forumulated by Fasse Paint Company, Sheboygan Falls, WI
Making its first major appearance at the Industrial Woodworking Midwest Expo in Grand Rapids, MI in December, Fasse Paint Company’s Triclad® Stain Matching System® utilizes an intermix of nine base stains plus one clear stain base. The system comes with two sets of 282 wood chips (one oak, one maple), each stained in a different color, and each with its own unique identification number. After selecting the desired color, that number is used to look up that stainís ìrecipeî in the systemís formula book, which specifies which of the ten stain bases are needed and in what proportion. With this formula, specified in “parts,” any quantity of stain can be mixed—small quantities for color testing, large quantities for established matches. The system can also be utilized outside of the 282 colors and formulas to efficiently create and/or match custom stain colors that are easy to test in small quantities and then replicate on a larger scale. Additional recommended equipment in the system is an 8- or 16-can mixing machine to ensure thorough, even agitation and easy, clean pouring and measuring.
A Color Matching System Just for Stains
Using established color systems to bring color matching to wood stain
In the 1990s, Harvey Fasse, then-president of Fasse Paint Company, began to hear a growing frustration among wood product manufacturers about the unavailability of ready-mix stains in no more than just 10 or 15 colors. Furthermore, the time and effort required to create custom stain formulations made the process unwieldy and expensive.
Says Fasse, “Customers wanted a cost-effective, easy-to-use system.” So he began developing a new system, borrowing a concept that has been used by both the paint industry and the printing industry for years. Specifically, the idea of using a measured blend of a few colors to produce an almost limitless gamut of other colors. Reasoned Fasse, ”If it can be done for paint, why not for stain?”
Why not, indeed. After several years of experimentation, formulation, modification, and refinement, Fasse Paint Company has perfected such a system, known today as the Triclad® Stain Matching System®.
The Color Challenge
Those who work with wood are well aware of the challenges of efficient, accurate color matching when it comes to staining. Itís very easy to spend hours upon hours painstakingly trying to formulate a stain that may be a close enough match to what is desired, and that maybe can be replicated the next time around.
The Triclad system, however, was specifically designed to efficiently create and/or match any wood tone. It had its first major introduction to the woodworking industry this past December in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the Industrial Woodworking Midwest Expo.
“People saw the term “Stain Matching Systemí on our booth sign and were intrigued,” says Jim Fasse, now the company president. “Since our company works with not just stains, but also paints and various other finishing products, color and color matching is second nature to us. But what we found in talking to woodworking people at the show is that, while they are fascinated with the idea of stain matching, they have little concept of how our system is able to do that. We had to do a lot of explaining, but the interest level was astounding.”
The System
The Triclad system utilizes an intermix of nine high-quality base stains plus one clear base. While each of the nine bases can stand on its own, the genius of the system is the ability to blend two or more of the bases to create a virtually endless array of colors.
A good starting point in creating or matching a particular stain color is to use the two sets of wood chips that come with the system (one set oak, one set maple). Each set consists of 282 of the most popular stain colors. Color options may be seen and compared at a glance, just as paint swatches are used to view different paint colors.
Each color has been assigned an identification number, which can then be looked up in the accompanying formula book. The formula book lists which bases are used to produce each color in the system and in what proportion.
The resulting colors can be utilized as they are, or may be fine-tuned to produce a virtually unlimited range of color choices. As long as any fine-tuning is documented, the integrity of the new formulations may be retained and replicated.
Whether using system colors or developing new colors, color development can be done in measurements as small as just a teaspoon, so material waste is minimized. All Triclad color formulas are based on ìparts,î not cups or pints or quarts, so test batches can be as small as desired, and final product batches can be as large as needed.
Triclad bases are designed specifically as intermixes that blend harmoniously as a system. Only Triclad-brand bases may be used in the system to maintain the consistency and accuracy of the formulas.
Because improper stain agitation can prevent consistent, high-quality results, another element of the Triclad system is a third-party mixing machine, the Fillon Pinchon MiniMix 150. An important element of this patented mixing system is the lid, which has a built-in paddle for thorough agitation and a tight-sealing, easy-pour spout for handling large quantities or small. Optionally, the Fillon Pinchon FP 7000 Select digital scale may be used for those who prefer to create formulations by weight instead of volume.
One user of the system is Doug Gluth, president of Brown County Cabinet of Green Bay, Wisconsin. “There’s no question that the Triclad Stain Matching System has already saved me thousands of dollars in labor and material cost,” he explains. “But the real benefit is that my sales reps can now show customers their custom stain colors almost immediately. None of us can even imagine going back to the old trial-and-error way of matching stains.”
Located in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, Fasse Paint Company manufactures and distributes not just the Triclad Stain Matching System, but a wide range of paint and woodworking products. New formulation for high-performance water-base stains; accompanying matching system
Fasse Paint Company of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, has announced a new line of wood stains made with a water-base formulation. Muddy, milky, washed-out tones; lack of uniformity and consistency; and substantial grain raise have plagued attempts at water-base wood stains for years. But after extensive research and development, Fasse has come up with an optimal formulation that performs at or above solvent-base stains, while still offering all the advantages of water-base products.
The stains are marketed under the name of Triclad, a brand Fasse Paint Company also uses for other commercial/industrial products, including the Triclad® Stain Matching System®. This system is a unique intermix system of several high-quality base stains plus one clear base. While each of the bases can stand on its own, the real beauty of the system is that you can blend two or more of the bases to create a virtually endless array of colors.
The matching system is now available for either water-base or solvent-base stains. More information and a free water-base sample is available at www.fassepaint.com, by emailing info@fassepaint.com, or calling 920-467-7850.

High-quality water-base stains? With a matching system?
For years, woodworkers and stain manufacturers have longed for stains that would perform like solvent-base stains but be available in a water-base formulation. Among these manufacturers is Fasse Paint Company in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin.
Frustration, then “Eureka!”
According to Jim Fasse, company president, “We have tried and tried again to come up with a water-base stain product, but got frustrated because we just werenít able to come up with a formulation that we were comfortable showing to customers. But then, after considerable, painstaking effort, we finally achieved the results we—and, more importantly, woodworkers—were looking for.”
Fasse pursued a water-base formulation because of the many advantages over solvent-base products: VOC compliance; nonflammability; no solvent smell; fast drying times; economy and price stability; easy cleanup; reduced labor effort, time, and expense; unlimited topcoating options; reduced drying time; minimal settle; and long shelf life. The key was finding a formulation that would perform up to high-quality standards.
Now, after years of painstaking experimentation, Fasse Paint Company has arrived at a formulation that that it claims puts water-base stains right up there with—and in some ways beyond—solvent-base stains. While Fasse didnít tell us his secret formula, he did tell us that it has overcome historical problem areas associated with water-base stains.
“Most everyone who works in wood finishing knows the shortcomings of traditional water-base stains,” Fasse continues. “Muddy, milky, washed-out tones; lack of uniformity and consistency; and substantial grain raiseÖ Their performance just wasnít there.”
Today, however, these water-base stains have piqued the interest of anyone who’s seen them in use, according to Fasse. He enthusiastically states, “I can’t remember the last time Iíve seen this much excitement about a new productóours or anyone else’s.” The stains are marketed under the name of Triclad, a brand Fasse Paint Company also uses for other commercial/industrial products, including the Triclad® Stain Matching System®.
It’s a system
A truly high-performing water-base stain product is incredibly innovative on its own, but Fasse Paint Company has taken it a step further. It has structured its line of water-base stains to function within its The Triclad Stain Matching System. The Triclad system has been on the market for several years, but until now utilized only solvent-base stains. Now woodworkers can utilize the system with either medium (just obviously not at the same time).
The Triclad Stain Matching System is a unique intermix system of several high-quality base stains plus one clear base. While each of the bases can stand on its own, the real beauty of the system is that two or more of the bases can be blended to create a virtually endless array of colors.
In creating the Triclad system, Fasse Paint Company has completed a time-consuming, trial-and-error process by creating hundreds of the most popular colors and documenting their formulas. The system comes with two sets of 282 wood chips that serve as paint swatches for stain.
But that’s just the beginning. Woodworkers can also use the wood chips as a starting point, then go ahead and fine-tune the mix any way they like, offering a virtually unlimited range of color choices. Whether using solvent or water, the Triclad bases are designed specifically to intermix with each other as a system. Sixteen ready-mix colors are also available in either formulation.
Some of the benefits of the Triclad Stain Matching System include ability to work in any batch size, quicker turnarounds for color studies, reduced labor expense, minimal waste, flexibility, and replicability.
In addition to the aforementioned stain bases and chip samples, the system also includes a formula book and a choice of mixing equipment to ensure proper agitation.
